Engaging Middle School Students to read

I know of a technology based curriculum for readng that works very well for both special ed students and regular ed students. It contains leveled text, video, voice etc... It is also 15,000.00 to buy initially plus $2,000 to upkeep each year. (read 180 Scholastic) We would love to have this program but of course we can't afford it. Part of the prompt for Grand Challenges mentioned competitions as a way to come up with breakthrough technologies. They are also a way to come up innovative ways of using technologies.
