  New mobile technologies and social media not only offer educators and students “anytime, anywhere” learning, but also “with anyone” learning. Research has demonstrated the powerful role that both mentors and peers can play in a student’s education. Now, for the first time in history, students worldwide have the potential to find mentors and peers from anywhere and at anytime. The challenge: how we help create the environment at a school where teachers have the flexibility and support to take advantage of mentors and peers outside their classroom to best meet their students’ needs.

  Exchange 2.0

  New technologies and social media have, for the first time in history, offer an unlimited number of teachers and students of all ages and economic backgrounds to develop relationships with one another and promote empathy, respect, prosperity and security across international borders in a way that has never been done before. “Exchange 2.0” isn’t dependent upon travel costs, real-time language immersion, face-to-face interaction, ...more »

  New technologies and social media have, for the first time in history, offer an unlimited number of teachers and students of all ages and economic backgrounds to develop relationships with one another and promote empathy, respect, prosperity and security across international borders in a way that has never been done before. “Exchange 2.0” isn’t dependent upon travel costs, real-time language immersion, face-to-face interaction, host families, culture shock or other traditional aspects of studying abroad. The challenge is to make the Exchange 2.0 experience as transformative as a study abroad program, especially for disadvantaged youth, young children, teachers and students with disabilities and others for whom international travel is a barrier to engaging with their peers around the world. What new technologies and social media tools are best suited to support Exchange 2.0?

  Scaling Literacy and Numeracy Through Global Storytelling

  New mobile technologies offer the K-12 classrooms worldwide unlimited opportunities for scaling the teaching and learning of reading, writing, and numeracy. New writing, audio, and video storytelling tools are being developed daily. Research shows that peer collaborative storytelling, editing and feedback is a powerful motivator for student learning.   New mobile technologies offer the K-12 classrooms worldwide unlimited opportunities for scaling the teaching and learning of reading, writing, and numeracy. New writing, audio, and video storytelling tools are being developed daily. Research shows that peer collaborative storytelling, editing and feedback is a powerful motivator for student learning. The challenge: how do US classrooms, which commonly ban cell phones and texting, enable peer learning through collaborative global storytelling with partner classrooms internationally, many of whom are less likely to have Internet access, but more likely to be creatively using mobile technologies and SMS so that literacy and numeracy improves worldwide.

  Connect Classrooms Globally

  Technology now gives our educators and students the opportunity to learn with the world, not just about it. The challenge: how do we help empower a new generation of young citizens who are aware of and comfortable with interaction with peers worldwide when most schools do not have the flexibility to pursue such connections?   Technology now gives our educators and students the opportunity to learn with the world, not just about it. The challenge: how do we help empower a new generation of young citizens who are aware of and comfortable with interaction with peers worldwide when most schools do not have the flexibility to pursue such connections?

  The education community and private sector companies have identified global awareness, ability to work in teams and a familiarity with technology as some of the skills that our young people will need to have to effectively work in a global environment. Research has clearly demonstrated that authentic interaction with the world’s students across the curriculum results in enhanced learning, improved reading/writing test scores by our students and a heightened motivation to learn.

  How can we leverage new technologies to connect all US classrooms with partners abroad in a way that seamlessly integrates into current curricula, so that global education is not an “extra?”
